The military as a job option is quite hazardous on the one
hand, involving risk to life, yet very rewarding at the same
time. Regardless of which branch of the military you join,
there are great benefits and helps. Moreover, you have the
option to make the military your career, or to sign up for a
limited amount of time, as a temporary job or to help you
get through school. Benefits and rewards aside, military is
a serious business and you should do research and make sure
that the military is right for you before you decide to
commit to military service.
One of the greatest benefits of joining the military is the
opportunity to get a college education. Most branches of
the armed forces offer some sort of tuition coverage and
some, if you join right after college, offer to pay off
some or all of your student loans. The Reserves or National
Guard units also offer great education incentives. If you
plan to fulfill a certain need in the military, you are
often sent, at the expense of the armed forces, to gain an
education to fit the need. This can result in a great
education that you can use after you receive discharge from
the military.
More than the educational benefits in the military are the
on-the-job training benefits. When you join a certain branch
of the armed services and decide to specialize in one
particular area, you will be given the best training. So,
you get an opportunity to develop your skills. If you are in
the Reserves or the Guard these skills can be related to
your civilian job. This can keep you up to date in your
training and make you a valuable resource. After you get out
of a full service military experience you are fit for the
job hunt. Many retired personnel make excellent consultants
after their training in the armed forces.
Physical fitness is another great benefit to military
service. You are required to stay in good form and you are
healthy. You are fed nutritional meals (you can get food at
a discount from the commissary as well) while in training,
and you get plenty of exercise. While it is possible to
over exert yourself in the military, most of the time you
come out in good shape.
There are many other benefits of the military such as you
get increased confidence, self-discipline, and the
opportunity to make a difference in the world. Nevertheless,
military service is not for everyone, but those who do well
in it reap lifelong benefits.
